The "Mediterranean" oil ministers said in a statement: The Gas Forum Charter will enter into force this March

The fourth ministerial meeting of the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum was held today in Cairo, in the Arab Republic of Egypt, in the presence of the energy ministers of Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan and Palestine.


The founding members announced in a statement today, Tuesday, that the Charter of the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum will enter into force on the first of March 2021, and the ministers attributed this important achievement to many serious steps and successive achievements that have been made since the launch of the forum in January 2019, through intense cooperation between Founding members, and the tremendous efforts made by their professional work teams.


The founding members celebrated the holding of their first ministerial meeting of the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum, after the forum's charter came into force, as a full-fledged intergovernmental organization based in Cairo, reaffirming the objectives of the forum as a platform for systematic dialogue on policies related to natural gas, and also indicated that the forum will contribute In developing a sustainable regional gas market, in a way that allows maximizing the utilization of the gas resources inherent in the Eastern Mediterranean region, with full respect for the rights of its members over their natural resources in accordance with international law.


The meeting discussed ways to move forward in organizational matters for the forum, including the continuation of Egypt's presidency of the forum until the end of 2021, and the first term, according to the charter, will begin in January 2022 when Cyprus takes over this role, the first founding country in alphabetical order. The meeting also appointed Professor Osama Mubariz, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Petroleum for Technical Office Affairs, Egypt Acting Secretary General of the Forum.


The meeting also discussed the activities of the forum, including the development of a long-term strategy for the forum and the launch of two new initiatives on “decarbonizing the gas” and “LNG as a fuel for ships” in line with global environmental trends. In light of this, a working group of experts will be formed to prepare the strategy, and a working group will be formed for each of the two initiatives. The ministers then got acquainted with the developments of the study on "Gas Supply and Demand in the Eastern Mediterranean", as part of the gas market assessment and its outlook. It is noteworthy that this study, which is being carried out with the support of the European Union, is one of the activities of the Gas Industry Advisory Committee at the Forum.


The ministers approved the Forum's work program for 2021, which included the main targeted steps towards finalizing the institutional preparation of the Forum, in parallel with its activities, including studies, initiatives and workshops.


The meeting also discussed official requests submitted by countries wishing to join the forum. The member states expressed their approval and welcome for France to join the Forum as a member, as well as the accession of the United States of America as an observer.


The founding members agreed to hold the next ministerial meeting in Cairo in the last quarter of 2021.


The ministers expressed their sincere appreciation to the Arab Republic of Egypt, led by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Republic, for providing maximum support to the Forum as a host country.
