UAE: Launch of the first nanometric satellite to strengthen the environmental monitoring system

The Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center, in cooperation with Dubai Municipality, announced the launch of the nanometric satellite (DMSAT-1) on March 20 from the Baikonur space port in Kazakhstan. With the aim of employing space technology and artificial intelligence techniques to enhance the environmental monitoring system at the level of the UAE, in addition to monitoring the concentrations of suspended particles in dust 10 PM-2.5PM and monitoring the concentrations of gases that cause the phenomenon of climate change (carbon dioxide, methane and water vapor).


Today, the Emirates News Agency reported that this came during a press conference held via video conference, between the Director of the DMSAT-1 Program, the First Director of the Remote Sensing Department from the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center, Adnan Al-Rayes, and the Director of the Environment Department at Dubai Municipality, Eng. Alia Al-Harmoudi.


Adnan Al Rayyes said that the beginning of the project was in 2016, setting the requirements for the Dubai Municipality to study the air through satellites, and in contracting with the University of Toronto to build the moon, which is characterized by its small size, as the weight of the nanometric DMSAT-1 satellite is about 15 kilograms and will take pictures with a resolution of 40 m by 3 Multispectral ranges rotate 14 revolutions around the earth per day at an altitude of 550 km from the surface of the earth. It has a life span to perform its tasks from 2-3 years and it carries 3 devices equipped with high-resolution cameras and a GPS system. The work team at the center will control the moon and manage all its operations and provide Dubai Municipality with all images and data after analyzing and processing them.


For her part, Engineer Alia Al-Harmoudi said, "The satellite will allow building a space database of air pollutants and gases that cause the phenomenon of climate change and study the concentrations of air pollutants and their impact on public health. We will also work on analyzing the employment of space data in the field of municipal work and employing environmental outputs." In the urban planning of the city, the use of lands locally, and support for global efforts in preserving the environment and confronting the phenomenon of climate change, which reinforces the leading role of the state in the fields of environmental scientific research and the prestigious position that the UAE has reached in the field of space and the fulfillment of international commitments towards the issue of climate change.


She explained that cooperation will be made with the rest of the emirates of the country and the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment in relation to air pollutants or greenhouse gases, and coordination will be made with universities and institutes to provide applications to employ the outputs of the project academically and globally, which will enable us to adhere to the Paris Agreement and cooperate with all the international community.
