Merkel calls on Washington to liberalize the market for vaccines and their components

German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced today, Saturday, her opposition to lifting the intellectual property rights over Corona vaccines, and called on the United States to liberalize the market for vaccines and their components.

"I hope now that a large portion of the American people have received the vaccine, that we will be able to ensure a free exchange of ingredients and liberalize the market for vaccines," Merkel told reporters.

She emphasized that "the European Union has been exporting a large part of its production to the world, and that should become the rule."

Merkel reiterated her opposition to lifting the intellectual property rights over vaccines, which was suggested by the administration of US President Joe Biden.

"I make it clear again that I don't think patenting will be the solution to making vaccines available to the largest number of people," she said.

And she continued, "I think that innovation and innovation for institutions are necessary, and for me this includes patents."
