The death of the Danish cartoonist who wrote the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad

Danish artist Kurt Westergaard, known for drawing an insulting caricature of the Prophet Muhammad, has died at the age of 86, his family told Danish media on Sunday.

According to Russia Today, his family said, "Vestergaard died in his sleep after a long period of ill health."

The painter was behind 12 cartoons published by the conservative daily "Jyllands-Posten" in 2005 under the headline "The Face of Muhammad," one of which sparked private outrage.

The cartoon, published in 2005, caused outrage from many Muslims in the world, which led to global protests.

In early 2010, Danish police arrested a 28-year-old Somali, armed with a knife and an ax, at Westergaard's home, where he was plotting to kill him.
